No True Muslim Fallacy     

The issue of religious extremism and violence has taken the leading role upon the comedic tragedy of the world stage.  Various subversive and insurgent political, financial, social, and cultural networks in Islam significantly contribute to the rise of ruin and global war in fundamentalist Islam.  The truth is that the religious dimension of this ruinous violence has its origins not in Wahhabi and Salafist theology; but in the origins of Islam.

Islamic apologists supply reactionary polemics to any critical appraisal to the faith, retreating to safe-groupthink words.  “Islamophobia,” “racist,” “bigot,” “Zionist,” are the safe-zone watchwords of Muslim apologists use to deflect the reality that dimensions of ruinous violence and oppression exist in Islamic doctrine.

Islamic apologists claim that any critical analysis of the Qur’an and Hadith is lost in interpretation, and will predictably retreat to their safe zone watchwords (Islamophobia).  Does the critical analysis, and even uninformed fear, warrant a label of clinical and psychological illness?  Fear is the forerunner of failure, and it is from fear that Islamic apologists retreat to their safe zone watchwords; fear of uncovering evidence that Islam is characteristically not a religion of peace.

A common logical fallacy persistently applied by Islamic apologists is the “No True Scotsman” (NTS) fallacy.  The failure of the Islamic “No True Muslim” fallacy empties out to its logical conclusion, paving the path to other logical fallacies, such as the apex fallacy (also semantic apex fallacy), when someone evaluates a group (Muslims) based on the performance of best group members, (“peaceful,” “moderate” Muslims) not a representative sampling of the group.  This illogical tool is vital in Islamic denialism and victimization.

Islamic apologists persistently apply the NTS fallacy to distance themselves from “extreme” or “radicalized” groups (and vice versa), but this does not prevent such extremists actually being religious Muslims, because they themselves certainly claim the contrary. Moderate Muslim leaders, for example, are well known for declaring Islamic extremists as “not true Muslims” as Islam is a “Religion of Peace.”  In the following sections, we will nullify and void this fallacy using the pillars of Islamic doctrine, the Qu’ran and Hadith.

Violence in the Qu’ran

The following ayat (verses) are only an abbreviated selection of the verses in the Qu’ran that can and have been used in the history of Islam justifying religious violence in the name of God and the glories of martyrdom in a “holy war.

2:190-193 “Fight in the cause of God those who fight you … And slay them wherever ye catch them … And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression and there prevail justice and faith in God …”

2:216 “Fighting is prescribed for you and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But God knoweth and ye know not.”

2:224 “Then fight in the cause of God and know that God heareth and knoweth all things.”

3:157-158 “And if ye are slain or die in the way of God, forgiveness and mercy from God are far better than all they could amass. And if ye die, or are slain, Lo! It is unto God that ye are brought together.”

3:169 “Think not of those who are slain in God’s way as dead. Nay, they live finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord.”

4:74-75 “Let those fight in the cause of God who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter. To him who fighteth in the cause of God whether he is slain or gets victory, soon shall we give him a reward of great value. Those who believe fight in the cause of God and those who reject faith fight in the cause of evil, so fight ye against the friends of Satan, feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan.”

4:89 “They but wish that ye should reject faith as they do, and thus be on the same footing as they. But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of God. But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them…” (emphasis mine)

4:95 “Not equal are those believers who sit at home and receive no hurt and those who strive and fight in the cause of God with their goods and their persons. God hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than those who sit at home.”

5:33 “The punishment of those who wage war against God and His apostle and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land. That is their disgrace in this world and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter.”

5:54 “O ye who believe. Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors. They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them for friendship is of them. Verily God guideth not a people unjust.”

8:12-17 “Remember thy Lord inspired the angels with the message: I am with you. Give firmness to the believers. I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. Smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them. This because they contend against God and his apostle. If any contend against God and his apostle, God is strict in punishment … O ye who believe. When ye meet the unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them. If any do turn his back to them on such a day, unless it be a stratagem of war … he draws on himself the wrath of God and his abode is Hell, an evil refuge indeed.”

8:59-60 “Let not the unbelievers think that they can get the better of the godly. They will never frustrate them. Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into the hearts of the enemies of God and your enemies and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom God doth know..”

8:65 “O apostle! Rouse the believers to the fight. If there are twenty amongst you, patient and persevering, they will vanquish two hundred. If a hundred they will vanquish a thousand of the unbelievers, for these are a people without understanding.”

9:5  “… fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem.”

9:14 “Fight them, and God will punish them by your hands, cover them with shame …”

9:29 “Fight those who believe not in God nor the Last Day nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by God and his apostle nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth even if they are of the people of the Book, until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.”

47:4 “Therefore, when ye meet the unbelievers, smite at their necks, at length when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them) … but if it had been God’s will, he could certainly have exacted retribution from them (himself), but (he lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the way of God, he will never let their deeds be lost.”

Islamic apologists assert that Qur’anic verses in support of fighting, were for a special historical dispensation concerning the persecution of Islam. They assert that since prophet Muhammad was persecuted in Meccah for the first thirteen years of his ministry, he was justified in his military actions in the last ten years of his life in Medinah and to preserve the new religious movement against pagan and tribal oppression. The fallacy with this logic is that nowhere in the Qur’an are the above commands to fight are restricted to a special time or against a specified dispensation against a special populace.

            In surah 9 At-Taubah, Muslims by “divine commandment” are instructed to subdue and humiliate pagans referred to as idolaters and wage war upon them.

9:3 A proclamation to the people from God and His apostle on the day of the greater pilgrimage:

God and His apostle are under no obligation to the idolaters. If you repent, it shall be well with you; but if you give no heed, know that you shall not be immune from God’s judgement.

Proclaim a woeful punishment to the unbelievers,

9:4 except to those idolaters who have honoured their treaties with you in every detail and aided none against you. With these keep faith, until their treaties have run their term. God loves the righteous.

9:5 When the sacred months are over slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them. If they repent and take to prayer and render the alms levy, allow them to go their way. God is forgiving and merciful.

In these verses, Muhammad is the aggressor, the breaker of peace and armistice, and murderer; forcing pagans to convert to Islam under compulsion.  These passages are clearly and concise edicts for war, to attack Pagans once the holy months are completed.  Special dispensation is provided under “divine immunity” to wage war against Pagans (9:3), having no “obligation to the idolaters.”

Per surah 9 At-Taubah, there is only one way out for pagan idolaters to be spared from being slain. They must repent, establish regular prayers, and practice regular charity, effectively converting under compulsion. As for people of the book, i.e. Christians and Jews, we read the verse in the same surah v. 29, which tells us the way out of being slain is “until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.”  In other words, they must pay protection money and accept to be subdued, i.e. second class citizens, even if they live in their own homeland.

O believers, the idolaters are indeed unclean; so let them not come near the Holy Mosque after this year of theirs. If you fear poverty, God shall surely enrich you of His bounty, if He will; God is All-knowing; All-wise. Fight those who believe not in God and the Last Day and do not forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden — such men as practise not the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book — until they pay the tribute out of hand and have been humbled. The Jews say, ‘Ezra is the Son of God’; the Christians say, ‘The Messiah is the Son of God.’ That is the utterance of their mouths, conforming with the unbelievers before them. God assail them! How they are perverted! They have taken their rabbis and their monks as lords apart from God, and the Messiah, Mary’s son — and they were commanded to serve but One God; there is no god but He; glory be to Him, above that they associate..”  -Surah 9:28-31

Muhammad’s actions speak loudly here. Committed near the end of his life, they clearly portray what he wanted his followers to continue to do: attack and conquer non-Muslim people.  Surah 9:5 is corroborated by 9:28-31, 9:123, and other ayat. 9:28-31 is also reinforced by Muhammad’s invectives. He walked the walk that he talked. He taught to make war upon and subject others, and he did just that. The jihad against the Christians and Jews followed the same direction against the pagans: ever expanding.

On war and the capture of women and slaves:

4:24 Dawood “Also married women, except those whom you own as slaves . Such is the decree of God. All women other than these are lawful to you, provided you seek them with your wealth in modest conduct, not in fornication. Give them their dowry for the enjoyment you have had of them as a duty; but it shall be no offence for you to make any agreement among yourselves after you have fulfilled your duty. God is all-knowing and wise.”

This hadith documents the means in which Muhammad and his mujahideen implemented this edict:

Abu Sirma said to Abu Sa’id al Khadri (Allah be pleased with him): O Abu Sa’id, did you hear Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) mentioning al-‘azl? He said: Yes, and added: We went out with Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) on the expedition to the Bi’l-Mustaliq and took captive some excellent Arab women; and we desired them, for we were suffering from the absence of our wives, (but at the same time) we also desired ransom for them. So we decided to have sexual intercourse with them but by observing ‘azl (Withdrawing the male sexual organ before emission of semen to avoid conception). But we said: We are doing an act whereas Allah’s Messenger is amongst us; why not ask him? So we asked Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him), and he said: It does not matter if you do not do it, for every soul that is to be born up to the Day of Resurrection will be born.” (Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3371)

Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri said: “The Apostle of Allah sent a military expedition to Awtas on the occasion of the battle of Hunain. They met their enemy and fought with them. They defeated them and took them captives. Some of the Companions of the Apostle of Allah were reluctant to have intercourse with the female captives in the presence of their husbands who were unbelievers. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Quranic verse: “And all married women (are forbidden) unto you save those (captives) whom your right hands possess.” They are lawful for them when they complete their waiting period. (Sunan Abu Dawud, Volume II, Book V. Kitab Al-Nikah (Book of Marriage), Chapter 711: To Have Intercourse With Female Captives Of War, Number 2150, p. 577)

sūrat āl ʿIm’rān 3:28 “Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends in preference to believers. Whoso doeth that hath no connection with Allah unless (it be) that ye but guard yourselves against them, taking (as it were) security. Allah biddeth you beware (only) of Himself. Unto Allah is the journeying.”

sūrat 5:51 Al-Ma’dah “O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends (auliya). They are friends (auliya) one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is one of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.”

sūrat 47:34-35 Muhammad “Indeed, those who disbelieved and averted people from the path of Allah and then died while they were disbelievers – never will Allah forgive themSo when in warfare with the enemy do not be faint of heart and cry out for peace in humiliation when you have the upper hand. Always bear in mind that God is with you, and He will never diminish the reward of your good deeds.”

sūrat āl ʿIm’rān 3:151 “We shall cause terror to enter the hearts of the faithless for their considering things equal to God without authoritative evidence. Their abode will be fire, a terrible dwelling for the unjust.”

sūrat āl-Anfal 8:39 “And fight with them until there is no more fitna and religion is all for Allah.

sūrat At-Taubah 9:73 “O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.”

sūrat At-Taubah 9:123 “O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness. And know that Allah is with the righteous.”

sūrat Al-Fath 48:29 “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and falling down prostrate, seeking Bounty from Allah and Good Pleasure. The mark of them (i.e. of their Faith) is on their faces (foreheads) from the traces of  prostration. This is their description in the Taurat. But their description in the Injeel is like a seed which sends forth its shoot, then makes it strong, it then becomes thick, and it stands straight on its stem, delighting the sowers that He may enrage the disbelievers with them. Allah has promised those among them who believe  and do righteous good deeds, forgiveness and an immense reward.

sūrat At-Taubah 9:30 “And the Jews say: ‘Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouths. They imitate the saying of the disbelievers of old. Allah’s Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth!”

ʾAḥādīth and other theological citations

ʾAḥādīth, or hadith, are narratives concerning a deed or sermon of the Prophet Muhammad reported by his companions. ʾAḥādīth are broken down into various classes such as the Hadith Qudsi in which God Himself speaks, and the Hadith Nabawi in which the words, and the Sunnah, custom or practice, of Muhammad are recorded. The narratives and religious doctrine of Muhammad, in addition to being repeated for the spiritual edification of the Muslim, were codified as legally binding dispensation. Hadith thus became a second source of law in addition to the law found in the Qu’ran.

Sahih Bukhari (52:73) – Allah’s Apostle said, ‘Know that Paradise is under the shades of swords’.

Sahih Muslim Book 001, Number 0033:

It has been narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer, and pay Zakat and if they do it, their blood and property are guaranteed protection on my behalf except when justified by law, and their affairs rest with Allah.”

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib:

A Jewess used to abuse the Prophet (peace be upon him) and disparage him. A man strangled her till she died. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) declared that no recompense was payable for her blood.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 38, Number 4349

Al-Adab al-Mufrad by Al-Bukhari, translated by Aisha Bewley, chapter XDIII. The People of the Book.

  1. When a dhimmi writes and gives the greeting, he is answered..
  2. Abu ‘Uthman an-Nahdi said, “Abu Musa wrote to a Persian grandee and greeted him in his letter. He was asked, ‘Do you greet him when he is an unbeliever?’ He replied, ‘He wrote to me and greeted me, so I have answered him.’”
  3. Abu Basra l-Ghifari reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “I will ride to the Jews tomorrow. Do not give them the greeting first. If they greet you, then say, ‘and on you.’”
  4. Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Do not give the People of the Book the greeting first. FORCE THEM TO THE NARROWEST PART OF THE ROAD.”

  8. ‘Abdu’r-Rahman said, “Ibn ‘Umar passed by a Christian who greeted him and Ibn ‘Umar returned the greeting. He was told that the man was a Christian. When he learned that, he went back to him and said, ‘Give me back my greeting.’”

Sahih Al-Bukhari, 9 vols. translated by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan, Al Nabawiya: Dar Ahya Us-Sunnah, n.d..:

Ibn Haban in his Sahih, vol. 14, p. 529, narrates: Muhammad said: “I swear by Him who has my soul in his hands, I was sent to you with nothing but slaughter.”

In his Musnad (vol. 2, p. 50) Imam Ahmed narrates by Ibn Omar: “the Prophet said: ‘I was sent by the sword proceeding the judgment day and my livelihood is in the shadow of my spear and humiliation and submission are on those who disobey me.’”

Omar Ibn al-Khatab said: “I heard the prophet of Allah saying: ‘I will cast Jews and Christians out of the peninsula and I won’t leave any one in it but Muslims.’” (Sunan Abu Dawud, vol. 2, No. 28, from the Muhaddith program)

Ibn Ishaq and al-Waqidi report that the prophet said the morning after the murder (of Kab Ibn al’Ashraf), “Kill any Jew you can lay your hands on.”  (El beddayah wa alnihaya – Ibn Katheer – vol. 4 – in the chapter on killing Ka’ab bin al’Ashraf)

“Allah’s Apostle said, ‘Know that Paradise is under the shades of swords.’” (vol. 4, p. 55)

“Allah’s Apostle said, ‘I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah,’ and whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah,’ his life and property will be saved by me…” (vol. 4, p. 124)

“It is not fitting for a prophet that he should have prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he has made a great slaughter (among his enemies) in the land…” (vol. 4, p. 161)

“Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.” (vol. 9, p. 45)

“An infidel spy came to the Prophet while he was on a journey. The spy sat with the companions of the Prophet and started talking and then went away. The Prophet said (to his companions), ‘Chase and kill him.’ So, I killed him. The Prophet then gave him the belongings of the killed spy.” (vol. 4, pp. 181-182)

Some people from the tribe of Ukl came to the Prophet and embraced Islam. The climate of Medina did not suit them, so the Prophet ordered them to go to the (herd of milk) camels of charity and to drink their milk and urine (as a medicine). They did so, and after they had recovered from their ailment (became healthy) they turned renegades (reverted from Islam) and killed the shepherd of the camels and took the camels away. The Prophet sent (some people) in their pursuit and so they were (caught and) brought, and the Prophet ordered that their hands and legs should be cut off and that their eyes should be branded with heated pieces of iron, and that their cut hands and legs should not be cauterized, till they die.” (vol. 8, pp. 519-520)

The Prophet passed by me at a place called Al-Abwa or Waddan, and was asked whether it was permissible to attack the pagan warriors at night with the probability of exposing their women and children to danger. The Prophet replied, ‘They (i.e. women and children) are from them.” (i.e. pagans).(vol. 4, pp. 158-159)

After Abu Afak was murdered, Asma wrote a poem blaming Islam and its followers of killing their opponenets:

When Muhammad heard what she had said he said, “Who will rid me of Marwan’s daughter?”  Ummayr b. Adiy al-Khatmi who was with him heard him, and that very night he went to her house and killed her.  In the morning he came to the apostle and told him what he had done and he [Muhammad] said, “You have helped God and His apostle, O Umayr!”  When he asked if he would have to bear any evil consequences the apostle said, “Two goats won’t butt their heads about her”, so Umayr went back to his people. Now there was a great commotion among B. Khatma that day about the affair of bint [girl] Marwan.  She had five sons, and when Umayr went to them from the apostle he said, “I have killed bint Marwan, O sons of Khatma.  Withstand me if you can; don’t keep me waiting.”  That was the first day Islam became powerful among B. Khatma.

The day after Bint Marwan was killed the men of B. Khatma became Muslims because they saw the power of Islam.”

Doctrine of Abrogation

According to Naskh, the doctrine of abrogation, meaning to annul or cancel something with appropriate or legal authority. Islamic theologians hold two main positions on abrogation:

Abrogation was abrogating older scriptures – Torah and Injil and not the Quran.

The Quran itself claims that no part of it is at variance with another, and hence the doctrine of Abrogation is not supported within the Quran.  Later texts supersede the earlier whenever there are inconsistencies, or they are said to “abrogate” the earlier texts.  Suyuti in his book استنباط التنزيل   Istenbat al tanzeel says: Every thing in the Qur’an about forgiveness is abrogated by verse 9:5. Al-Shawkani in his book السيل الجرار Alsaylu Jarar 4:518-519 says: Islam is unanimous about fighting the unbelievers and forcing them to Islam or submitting and paying Jiziah (special tax paid only by Christians or Jews) or being killed.   [The verses] about forgiving them are abrogated unanimously by the obligation of fighting in any case.

Muslims and non-Muslim apologists counter that violence in the Quran and Hadith must be examined contextually within the scope of history and culture.  Islam is not a “religion of peace” intrinsically.  Islam as a spiritual philosophy, religious doctrine, and codified ethics is culturally exclusive and subversive.

The Interpretation of Islamic Scripture is a form of reasoning (Interpretative Reasoning) that requires knowledge & expertise. In the Islamic Tradition, as in any other Tradition or Knowledge, there is a system of Authority one is required to be part of if one wishes for his Opinions to be Authoritative & not discarded. Understanding the Qu’ran requires the mastery of Classical Arabic (of the Qu’ran).  Properly understanding the meanings of the ayat in the Qu’ran requires knowing what the one who was given the authority to explain it (the Prophet) had to say about them. That is to say, knowing the Prophetic Tradition: the Hadith, which amounts to an estimated 103,000!

Islam is culturally exclusive.  Violent ideas have violent consequences.  Apologists supply reactionary polemics to any critical appraisal to the faith, retreating to political safezone-groupthink ideas.  They employ the age old “No True Scotsman” logical fallacy.  “Islamophobia,” “racist,” “bigot,” “Zionist,” are the safe-zone watchwords of Muslim apologists use to deflect the reality that dimensions of ruinous violence and oppression are embedded in the cult of Islam.
